Problem with air in angle rams

Hi. I need some help from the experts.
I have a one year old Fisher 8'6" V. I hung the plow for the first time the other day and noticed the plow was slow going from v to scoop. Also noticed I could move the wings back and forth by hand four or five inches. I figured I must have gotten some air in the system and tried to work it out by moving the plow back and forth. Didn't seem to want to bleed out. I figured I might as well change the fluid and see what happens. I followed the procedure outlined in the manual and it worked like a charm. I plowed five or six driveways and a road in yesterday's storm and didn't have any problems at all. I went out tonight to clean up a driveway and I'm right back to the way it was. The plow seems to raise and lower ok but the angle cylinders are full of air. Anybody have any ideas? I did notice one of the hydraulic lines had a loose connection when I changed the fluid, but everything seems tight now - no visible leaks. I also notice that the fluid seemed foamy the first time it happened. I haven't checked it tonight.
Thanks
Bill

I am going to try the same I did when I changed the fluid, wich was to disconnect the lines from the and manually force the air out by pushing and pulling the wings. It fixed it the first time. My problem is I need to find out where the air is coming from.

You have the same plow i have,it sounds like your pump is picking up air ,i have heard a few guys had problems with the pickup tube and strainer coming off inside the pump housing, not sure if the fisher pumps are built that way,but the pump is sucking air from somewhere,a loose fitting would leak fluid, its not likely thats where the air is coming from.

I think you're right. The fitting was barely loose and I didn't notice any leaks around it. Do you have any ideas on how to check for possible problems with the pickup tube or suction side of the pump. I might try making an appointment at Weirs, but the guy at the parts counter said they were backed up for two weeks or so. Not too encouraging.

You may want to call W.A.Messer in Westbrook. They usually can get you in fairly fast. At least talk to Tom in parts, he is a wiz at these things. Might be able to talk you through it.

Yeah,i know Weirs are busy,it looks to me if you take the four screws out of the oil reservior, and remove it,the pump pickup tube and strainer will be easily seen, from the diagram it appears to be just pushed into the pump, and held in place only by the friction of an oring,i'm guessing it may be laying in the bottom of the oil reservoir,or it may have a crack in the tube.If the pump is sucking air,it will be a fair bit noiser than normal. You probably wouldn't notice air in the lift ram nearly as much as the wing cylinders.

I'll give them a try tomorrow. I have had good dealings with them. I bought a sander and an 8 ' plow from them before. The v plow came from Weirs as a package deal through Claire ford. I'm not sure if they warranty what they don't sell, but I don't care about money if it's something simple. Thanks for your help.

Capnkel,
I do notice a change in the pitch of the pump as I try to angle the cylinders back and forth. I'll take it apart tomorrow and see what I can find. Thanks for your help. I think I came to the right place.

Well, I think I might have found the culprit. I found a split in one of the hose flare fittings where it attaches to the base of the right angle ram. I checked the dip tube and strainer and everything was in order there. Went to Messer and they sent me out the door with a warrany upgrade breather cap along with a new hose. I installed the new breather cap. It is gray plastic with a one way valve. It is supposed to replace the old all metal breather. One thing I noticed is with the new cap, pressure builds up in the resivoir. I ended up taking a shower in hydraulic fluid when I removed the fill plug to top it off. Has anyone else switched to the new plug and noticed this? Anyway, everything seems to be working fine for now. The only other thing I noticed is the right wing seems to be slower than the left when going from v to scoop. I don't remember it being like that before and I'm not sure if it's normal. Well thanks to everyone for the help.
